What the hell?

Is anyone else watching what is going on in New Orleans and asking what on earth is taking so long to help these people? Where are the troops we keep hearing are going to arrive? Why is it five days later, and hundreds of people are dying waiting for aid? And, by aid, I mean food and water! Its shameful!

And, then my sister-in-law sent an email criticizing the people who didn't evacuate. But, if you don't have a car, or any money, I would imagine it would be a little challenging to evacuate. Or, if you're hospitalized on a ventilator. Or if you're really old, and in a nursing home. That's nice - blame the victims for their lack of resources.

I heard this morning that Bush wasn't likely to visit New Orleans personally during his review of the hurricane damage lest he cause even more problems in an already out of control situation. But, then I remember him standing in the middle of Ground Zero soon after September 11 with a hard hat and a bullhorn, rallying rescue workers and the country at large. Does the chaos of New Orleans not offer the proper photo ops? Regardless of the security implications, I'd like to see our president on the ground, getting an upclose look at what's going on, and busting some heads to get things moving. (Flying over at 10,000 feet in Air Force One doesn't count.) Hell, he could put all the Secret Service guys and press corps members that travel with him to work. Lord knows they need every hand they can get down there.

Watching TV coverage for a few minutes makes it obvious that the victims are the poor, the eldery, the disabled - ultimately the most disadvantaged members of our society. Evacuation for them doesn't mean hopping into the family H2 and cruising to the vacation home.

There is an article in today's Post that details one family's experience. They didn't evacuate because there were too many people to fit in a Chevy Cavalier - the family's only car.

"What the hell?" is right. In a country where so much opportunity exists, that people can be so void of empathy is despicable.
