Bad taste or creative genius?
I'm not sure if any of you have heard about this movie, Death of A President, but it's a fictional retrospective of President Bush's assassination on October 19, 2007. While I think the idea is certainly unique and groundbreaking, I feel I must question the tastefulness of the subject matter. While I aggressively defend the rights entitled under the First Amendment, I do feel, frankly, sickened, that someone would dramatize a fictional assassination of a sitting president of our country, or even the assassination of any living, breathing human being for that matter. I am very curious to see what you guys have to say regarding this film. I have included a link to the short trailer. http://www.apple.com/trailers/newmarket/deathofapresident/

It appears to really push the bounds of free speech (and good taste) and I suppose, in doing just that, it's valuable to our society. It gets us discussing and arguing, and that's a Very Good Thing.
I was going to ask how is this movie different than any other film or TV show in which a political figure is targeted/killed. But, upon reading your post again, Todd, I caught your distinction that this is the dramatization of the killing of an actual person. Which, in retrospect, does not sit well with me either. I recognize Sean's point that it does push the bounds of free speech and will spark discussion. And, while I suppose I would defend this filmmaker's right to create such a film as an expression of his right to free speech, that doesn't mean I think it's in good taste and/or appropriate.
I agree on the inappropriateness of the subject matter, but remember it is a foreign film so I think the rules are somewhat different. I'll reserve judgment until I understand the plot and what they are exploring. I think it would be fascinating in today's hyper-sensitive security world to see what Cheney and others would do if Bush was incapacitated. Would they just blow up the entire earth in retaliation?
