Insensitivity or Ignorance? You make the call.

Monday, former Presidents Bush and Clinton visited the Astrodome. Unfortunately, President Bush decided to bring his wife. After meeting with the some of the evacuees, she commented, "What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them." I actually heard the soundbite this morning, and I can attest that she actually chuckled slightly as she finished the sentence. Either she is completely unaware of the ordeals these people have endured; the family, possessions, jobs that they have lost. Or, she is pretty cold. Either way - Yikes, Barbara!

Is that a direct quote? Holy sh*t!

Here is a link to a CNN article that has the quote in it.

Nice, huh?

I heard Barb's soundbite today. What in the hell was she thinking to say something like that, especially given the scrutiny by the black community that Bush's response, or lack thereof, to the storm damage is racially based.

Yup, that's a direct quote. I, too, heard the sound bite, and Babs does chuckle a little when saying that the forced move to Texas (forced by Katrina) was working out well for poor people, i.e. was a step up from their normal lives.

Why is everyone surprised? She's been making comments like this for years. She looks like a nice, friendly grandma, but is an awful person. You think the President's obvliviousness to reality and the plight of the non-wealthy is out of the blue? Nope, good ol' fashioned home nurturing.

Al Franken has a funny anecdote about how Barbara totally bitched him out on a plane where they happened to be sitting next to each other once. I believe that it is in "Lies and the Lying Liars that Tell Them", which is a damn good read anyway for anyone who gets pissed off by Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, and co.
