Leaglize It?

From a Schmolitician who wishes to remain anonymous:
This is an interesting article from the former Seattle police chief advocating legalization (note not decriminalization). I'd like to see a well written counterpoint. Any takers?
What do you guys and gals think about this article?

I agree, actually. I have long thought that legalising and taxing marijuana makes sense. I had not really thought so much about harder drugs, since they would seem to be much more dangerous. However, everything this chap says makes sense to me.

I think, whether legalisation is the best way forward or not, we do need to end the "war on drugs", acknowleging that the way we have been fighting it is just to keep us from losing, it is not a viable strategy for victory. The European countries have a more reasonable stance. In at least Holland, pot is legal, regulated, etc. In all of the Western European countries, drug use is treated as a social problem as much as it is a crime. This is something that we do not do in America. We write the dope fiends off as criminals, without even stopping to consider why they are using. And without knowing that, without finding ways to treat the demand, we cannot win, for we cannot stop the supply.
