Politics Schmolitics
We are a group of friends and acquaintances -- a merry band of pranksters indeed -- who have been arguing about politics on-and-off, then really on, then a little off... since 1998. On email. But that meant literally thousands of emails a year. That was too many. So here's the blog dedicated to carrying on that spirit of political and pop culture argument and dialogue. You might think of us as "schmoliticians", because while we take politics seriously, we try not to take ourselves quite so.

I've been thinking more about this issue since I watched the clip yesterday and am wondering if this issue hasn't been sensationalized/blown out of proportion by the media. One of the points raised by the Fox commentator was that Ramsey took vacation while telling his officers that some of them would have to cancel their own vacations. However, what Ramsey actually said was that during this crime emergency, some officers who hadn't had their vacation pre-approved may have to cancel their leave. Ramsey *did* have his leave pre-approved. As was also noted in the Fox broadcast, this is only the second vacation the chief has taken in 8 years. And, I'm sure he has competent staff in place to handle things while he's gone. Having said all of that, though, I do believe this was a public relations blunder. Even if he was entitled to take vacation, had it pre-approved, had staff to over his absence, etc., what the public saw was its police chief skipping town in the middle of a crisis.
What I want to know, Sean, is why you waited until Day 42 of the Crime Emergency - DAY 42!! - to go on the record? Where have you been while the city has drifted aimlessly, leaderless?? I think the Mayor will have to look long and hard at your action - or, more appropriately, inaction - during those terrible, bleak 41 days when he reconsiders your role in the District.
I am so very, very ashamed.
