Town bans flying foreign flags
This is just too unbelievable... I guess all politics is local. How right they are!
We are a group of friends and acquaintances -- a merry band of pranksters indeed -- who have been arguing about politics on-and-off, then really on, then a little off... since 1998. On email. But that meant literally thousands of emails a year. That was too many. So here's the blog dedicated to carrying on that spirit of political and pop culture argument and dialogue. You might think of us as "schmoliticians", because while we take politics seriously, we try not to take ourselves quite so.

Obviously this law will be challenged in the court system as being blatantly unconstitutional. However, this whole Mexican immigration ordeal has me scratching my head about one thing: why do people care so much about Mexicans coming into this country? Personally, I harbor great support and admiration for these people. In my experience, they are a hard working and amiable group of people. I really don't even mind that much that many of them don't speak English. After all, there are groups within this country who have been natural citizens for a dozen generations, yet still refuse to assimilate and speak our common language.
Wait, have they secretly replaced out caffeinated, tough-as-nails-on-immigration Todd with decaffeinated Budlong Crystals? I like your thought process here, Todd, but I'm frankly surprised to hear you espousing it.
Me, I'm torn. Really torn. I think unchecked illegal immigration is problematic. I think it's dividing America along some nasty lines. I also think an immigrant population willing to work in the most menial of jobs is integral to the success and health of this economy.
We have two choices: 1) we tolerate an illegal population because demand calls for it, or 2) we adjust the status of these aliens because we're uncomfortable with them not paying taxes, not paying into social security, using healthcare resources, driving uninsured, not being registered with the DMV, etc.
I don't think we can continue down this muddled, half-assed path. And despite my better judgment, I thought Bush's amnesty ideas weren't half bad.
Not surprisingly, I agree with Sean. Unchecked illegal immigration bad. Immigration itself good. Immigrants good. Immigrants paying taxes and having car insurance very good.
I am all for new, realistic immigration reform, not involving the phrase, "what if we just built a wall?". I am also in support of offering amnesty and a clear path to citizenship for illegals who are currently in the country.
